Sony’s ‘GOAT’ Was A Box Office Slam Dunk Over Its Opening Weekend
The box office over the Presidents’ Day holiday weekend was topped by Wuthering Heights, but when it came to animation, Sony Pictures Animation’s original feature GOAT was the clear standout. Early estimates put the film at roughly $47.6 million worldwide over its opening 4-day weekend, outperforming most expectations and proving that original feature animation can still draw big crowds.

Sony Pictures Animation is currently making Goat, an original animated sports comedy from producers Stephen Curry and Erick Peyton of Unanimous Media, Oscar nominee Michelle Raimo Kouyate (The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, Silver Linings Playbook), and Adam Rosenberg (Creed 3) and Academy Award winner Rodney Rothman (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) of Modern Magic. Emmy-nominated director Tyree Dillihay (Bob’s Burgers) will direct, and Adam Rosette (Orion and the Dark) will co-direct. Aaron Buchsbaum and Teddy Riley (Fairfax) are writing the screenplay. David Schulenburg (The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, Spider-Ham: Caught in a Ham) is co-producing. Rick Mischel (Open Season: Call of Nature) and Fonda Snyder (Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum) are EPs.

With sharp direction by Kiki DeMicco (The Croods), who co-wrote the script with longtime Miranda collaborator Quiara Alegria Hudes (In the Heights), and co-directed by Brandon Jeffords (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), the gorgeously animated film is largely CGI but peppered with visually stunning standard 2D animation for some musical sequences…. Vivo is indeed a special treat for families.
